You've just got the yard of your dreams and everything looks great. As the months go by you start to realize that, although your yard looks great, there are a few things that have changed. weeds are growing and hurting the plants you've wanted for so long, the bushes look messy and too tall for your liking, and some plants don't seem to be thriving like you expected them too. Let's discuss some ways to fix these problems.
Dealing with Weeds
If you're familiar with yard work then weeds are no stranger to you. Here are some ways to prevent these invasive plants from showing up.
(don't do what this guy did and make sure you pull the root out)
Cutting/Pulling weeds from the root: weeds have the tendency to linger around if they are not removed properly, that is why it's so important to locate the root/head of the weed and remove it.
Laying down a layer of mulch: Mulch is useful for many things such as conserving water and protecting the soil, but mulch is also responsible for suppressing weeds and limiting the sunlight they get making it much harder for them to thrive.
Weed Killers: This one is the most commonly used technique for getting rid of weeds. With a pretty straightforward approach, apply solutions such as weed killer over areas where weeds seem to thrive. It's also helpful to apply it to areas where you just removed the root from, just be careful and avoid spraying other plants as well.
Trimming Plants, Bushes, and Shrubs
As your garden continues to grow you can also expect some overgrown plants taking up more space than they should, with the right tools one can get to work by:
Trimming bushes slowly and carefully to avoid over-cutting
Trim bushes to a round shape to avoid snow piling on them
cleaning up with tools such as rakes, leaf blowers, and tarps.
Watering and Familiarizing Yourself with Drip Lines
This one is straight forward but it might be confusing and overwhelming to those who are new to maintaining a xeriscaped yard. Not all drip lines look the same but they always have the purpose of making the watering process easier for you. Watering is pretty simple if you have a grass yard, with xeriscaping our goal is to make than even simpler to the point of not having to worry about irrigating your plants. Pretty neat right?
All these things can be a lot to take in if you're new to maintaining a yard, but with due time and patience at Utah Wildflower Co. we specialize in making sure that the yard of your dreams stays with you
